Hi all,
Thanks to Adrian for the inspiration, I have started a new loco......... 4-2-4.

This is a pic of the chassis just made and track tested.

Hi Rowan,

My first impression is that it's a variant of the Beyer-Garrett.

G'Day folks
Rowan, just found your photo. Looks like the only unpowered wheels are the big ones in the middle. If so does this mean it's a 0-4-2  0-4-0 ? Or is it a 0-4-0  2-4-0 ? Or is it a 0-4-2-4-0 ?
Anyway hope to see the finished loco (no matter what the wheel arrangement) in the flesh at Sydney at Easter 09
Regards Adrian
I might be daft, but not stupid

Adrian....

The only 'powered' wheels on the finished item will be the large centre one.

It remains to be seen whether it will be driven by cylinders at the front, or by cylinders at the front AND at the back.

In the first instance, it would be a 4-2-4, in the second, a 4-2/2-4?? somewhat like a Beyer-Garrett, B2?

Is there a prototype for a loco with the driving wheel/s being driven by rods going both to the front and back, I wonder?

As for showing it in Sydney in Easter.... well, I have been thinking about what I should enter.. should be fun. In 2007 I entered Koal Porter 2-2-2 (otherwise known as Nevel) and that caused some comments among the narrow minded attendees. (Sorry. I meant narrow gauge attendees, and I know some of them are on this forum, and many had positive comments !!

Cheers

Rowan,

If you were to follow the British example, the cyinder might be on the inside, such as this Waverly Class loco.

Thks B2... That would be cheating now wouldn't it? The rods etc must be seen...

There has been a Great Weight put on the model - see pic below

OK, if you must have rods and valve gear, then may I suggest that you might follow the example of the Birdwater Shops and make your rods vertical. Then, you may set teh eccentrics inside, on the axle or place them outside for more of a "flailing about" effect, in which case, the more rods the better. Don't forget a link to an external oiler.

Thks B2.
I made a vertical boiler/rods etc a while ago. See pic.
Was relatively successful, although the object was to make a 0-2-0.
The rods on my new item will be connected to cylinders at either end of the loco (I hope)

Thks B2, Carshops...

Herewith latest pics, the painted lady 'Ettie'... that's her behind the wheel.

Not too much hair d'y'think?

Some light weathering, names plates, numbered (determined by the number of rivets installed  !!), repaint of inside cab, addition of dials, some piping (for the steam), some Blair Athol coal, and we're all set.

Then, some carriages.

Cheers
