Here is my latest project: a G9 layout on a pie plate.

And after some work:

Its amazing how these little Dollar Store trains keep showing up in weird little layouts. Looking at them, the potential to do something more with them is obvious. A little card,or some plastic sheet and you could really come up with something unique.  ::)

Nice job on the scenery.

I've seen them with other pieces of rolling stock and straight track so there is actually a variety to look for and the possibilities increase. I've got one done in Coca Cola livery with a box car and caboose. Hmmmmm!!! :D

Thanks Tommy and G-Man.  :P  I did some more work on the layout over the weekend, adding some more boardwalks and a retaining wall.  The "engineer" is scratchbuilt from Sculpey modeling clay over a wire and aluminum foil core.  I need to do some more work on him since he falls over when the train starts moving.

Nice job, very innovative. Makes me want to have a go at something similar as it involves very little outlay of cash to do it.

Thanks, Trainboy and G-Man.  :D

That's the best thing about it - $5 for the plate, $2 for the train, plus inexpensive scenic materials, and you've got a layout.  The downside is I haven't been able to find any more of those trains since Christmas.  Maybe they'll have them again this year.

Don't know about your neck of he woods but they abound here in the Dollar stores. Finding one should take about 15 minutes on the way home from work. Got some ideas though that will require 2 or 3 sets. I've seen them with straight tracks also,

yeah dollar tree here just put out a passenger set for like $2 it has three coaches a tender a loco and an oval of track.
there are also some bigger ones a hole set of loco's that run on o gauge track
that's a loop with switches and a loco and a coach or two pending on the set you could even get a crane for $5

I haven't seen them at our local Dollar Tree, but some of the others may have them.  In the meantime, here's a video of the layout in operation.

Ditto on not finding it in my nearest Dollar Tree, but I'll spread out my search.

G-Man, here is an O-scale set from Dollar General.  It runs on 2 D batteries in the locomotive.  Runs good for the price, but a bit noisy.  I'm trying to think of something to kitbash the loco into.
