What I did this weekend CLOCKWORK
« on: September 20, 2009, 10:18:25 AM »
I have been very naughty and I've been playing with Clockwork motors...I bought 4 via Ebay for less than £20 in total..all Meccano No1 and reversable. Two are a little weak other pair are much stronger.

I have used one of the weakest to make a AWNUTS deconstructed loco...There are a few bits to add (ie.dome, crew and ??)
The idea is to have fun and as ever have something different to run and a couple of hours buildtime.

The cheap 'meccano' type kit cost me 99p from Range (a cheap household/toys shop) and having used some old Binnie wheels and sleeving them in brass tube (to build up the axles to 5mm diameter...then found the cheap kit had 2 x 5mm shafts ideal...oh well use them on the next project  ( for the UKers...the kits are imported by Kandytoys from Exeter, the jeep is fine for a chassis for a little runabout with 3volt motor)

I have, with this loco, used direct drive to the wheels with IP 4x4 drive attached, as this motor is the weakest......I will attempt something similar as seen on the CLOCKWORK IN THE GARDEN  pages I found sometime ago and have the motor on a separate chassis with chain drive.

The whole thing came to no more than £6 (£5 the motor..old rail, screws, a part of the 99p kit and card)....yet to see what it can pull.

To see better models.......

(if the above link does not work try googling CLOCKWORK IN THE GARDEN )...i think we may have already had this link...but who cares

Hope you like it

What a wonderful site your link provided, thanks for posting it. I'd like to know more about the build and the performance of the finished engine if you don't mind providing that information!

I like the Paper figures too! It's a really nice idea to limit the weight on a clockwork locomotive where ever you can.

Almost there.....have added a train of tippers with wire wool payloads.Just need to add the Guard to the last truck.

The tippers are old ones made by No2 Son and I years ago out of steel beer cans (rubbed with glass paper, soaked in vinager and hung out in the rain to RUST
The chassis are wood with Binnie wheels and axles held by wire clips (type used for holding small wires you nail to skirtingboards etc). The tipper shapes are either glued or rivited, and small nails are used as pins for support....very tatty, very cheap (and yes the beer helped)

I have left the chimney white (except for a copper top) to show its Green credentials....The ROCKET ...yes the original one, had a white chimney to show how clean it was at the rainhill trials...that loco used coke as opposed to coal as it was cleaner...apparently!

Great job, Crackingjob.

I like the ore cars. And with the clockwork working that white stack will stay clean.

The clockwork is excellent, seriously cranky, Crackingjob, and your cartoon figures have inspired me:

I have a large "Funky foam" Emett train that sometimes does shuttle duty (on 45mm track) in my kitchen window.  It has been much improved by a couple of added flat figures, following your lead.

Also following the lead here.... I thought the figure treatment could open up a whole new range of modelling............

My latest... a Maine 2 footer critter?

Didn't over do the decoration did I?

I don't think I'm up to the complex figure treatment at this stage.........

Wonderful, Rowan.

Emett did a cartoon take on this, with old and dirty locos getting a flat plywood "makeover" on one side so they looked fresh and new for a royal visit.

Photocopy an impressive loco and blu-tack it to a little speeder?

What have i started!!!!! 2d locomotion! all WONDERFUL! :D

The flat figures are not hte first i've done....my tatty coaches have them, photocopied and coloured from a childrens book of cotumes in 19th/20th century.

I do know of one 16mm association member (Phil Sixsmith i think) who photographed himself and his friends in seating postions, did a mirror copy on photoshop, stuck them back to back, cut to shape and put in his coaches....no theres a thing all of us trundling around each others lines!

I'll be doing some more on the rail car this week..photo to follow ;D

My father had one very similar to this. Although he's passed away, I'm pretty sure it's still in Mom's attic.
