Humm...
Pee-nut (pecan nut) (yes, I know I missed spell it)
          Wally   (walnut) (walmart)
          Ole Hickory (hickory nut)
          Mac  (macadamia nut)

My question is... "does it have a tender behind?"

I've started a mock-up (Muck-up?) in paper.... I think there might be something wrong with the prototype as my model is slightly different........

or maybe one or the other is just moonlighting?

CJ, noted. You are correct.

Perhaps a different shaped window on each side?

Well there were fewer boards on the drawing, and the moon cut out was more centered. So either the boards on the drawing were wider, or the cab was shorter, or both. either way it looks ok to me.

CJ, I like the way you've done the cab, with differing sizes of timber and colours.

Cheers

Lolly and coffee sticks stuck to a card base for the cab. matchsticks for windo frames and tin can for the roof...quite heavy though.

The sticks are coloured by soaking in a mixture of white vinegar and rust (a concoction I learnt via Garden Rails..put a rusty nail or 2 in a bottle of white  vinegar and leave for a few days...remove the nails and shake the mixture)...you can soak or paint but I recommend you colour and dry the wood (or for you accross the Pond..... color) before glue as the vinegar un glues everything.  Several coats can make it darker, and different wood soak up and colour contrastingly.

Thanks for the tip on the rusty nail mixture. Gotta file that away for future reference. That's a unique way to colour (I'm from Canada) wood. Gotta remember about the glue/vinegar thing.

Was looking at one of my Marx wind-ups and it looks like it would make an easy fit into an A.W.N.U.T.S. loco.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi all,

After a short delay, my  AWNUTS  loco has taken a great leap forward...
See pics below...

Next step is mix up a mixture as recommended by CJ ie put a rusty nail or 2 in a bottle of white  vinegar and leave for a few days...remove the nails and shake the mixture..

So I can 'paint' the model.

The 'G Scale' figure has been included for reference for size.

Cheers
Rowan
PS Apols for any picture problems, but I've had to buy a new digi camera. (My 5 year old 5 meg Nikon died) and I'm still trying to get used to this new fangled Panasonic 12 zillion pixal item)
(And I still can't work out how to load up my pictures among the text above)

I cut it twice and it's still too short.

I have used the rusty vinegar mixture too in the past. Might I suggest that you test it out on some scrap wood left over from the project first. That way you can dilute it with more vinegar or whatever before you put it on your creation and then find that you don't like it. I ended up painting a wooden N scale boxcar I built because I didn't like the way the rusty vinegar colour turned out. On the next boxcar I thinned them mixture a bit and I loved the look.

I also have tried this technique. At first I was not impress you have to wait until it dries. I try it on a piece of balsa wood and received a rusty brown color. It took about three days w/ nails and other scrap metal to create a good solution. Every so offer loosen the cap to relief the pressure. The solution does well with with wood but other materials like plastic.
Good Luck, Joe
