There was in a back issue from the early 70's, I want to say, where Railroad Modeler ran a one pager addressing a mixture for creating the effect. I believe it was Vinegar and a piece of steel wool maybe. The deeper you plunged the paintbrush into the mix the darker the shade of the effect.

I personally just use Alcohol and ink mix and let the wood soak for a couple minutes depending on the wood your using. If I don't like the look I take another swig of the alcohol and try again. I don't get much work done that way , but I don't really care after a few tries!

Is that single malt ink...?
 :D
I cut it twice and it's still too short.

We use black India ink a teaspoon to one bottle of alcohol as wash or a stain. I also tried white India ink w/ no luck.

The rusty nail/vinegar solution has been applied.
While the photos show a fairly bright looking finish, in reality the finish is quite dull and flat.. not un-attractive.
However, I will probably brush on some light varnish to give a bit of a lift.

Next step is to make a suitable car to haul.

Cheers

Rowan,

How about Port-O-Lets?? That too could be the locomotive design you have!

Yeah, I was aware of the designs origin, but I was trying to keep on thread... so to speak. You might be able to make flat cars play with bathroom euphemisms, such as the 'Head', the Throne Room, the "library"... of course these are known to me as only as American terms, I'm sure NZ has their own slang.

Why, is your office broken?

Lets see, other euphemisms for that room.....Water Closet or W.C., John, Rest Room. And for the portable version we got Port-A-Potty, Port-A-John, Johnny on the spot, Little John......

I just acquired a matched pair of Marx O-gauge clockwork locomotives.  Here is the link to the recently closed e-bay auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140385182899&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Is there a resource document or other thread available to guide a newby in repairing/restoring these mechanisms.

The rusted one is frozen completely - would Liquid Wrench or WD-40 be a good starting point?

The other mechanism is missing a cross bracket between the two sideframes and one sideframe is bent/warped allowing the spring axle to jump out of alignment.  I should be able to find threaded metal spacers to replace the missing cross bracket, and I'm guessing the other two will have to be replaced as well.  However, before I break loose the sides to clean everything and flatten the warped side frame, I'd like to know if there is a trick/skill to disassembling these mechanisms and not having the spring & all of the parts fly around the room.  I will wear my safety glasses!!!

As the AWNUTTER who started this thread I thought I had better contribute as its some time since I last posted...real life getting in the way

Whym.... I will get around to the door and have two trucks to work on.....though I see the master Rowan is ahead of me...anyone else doing the logo loco?

NEW (the Hunslet that NEver Was) is progressing and so are the card coaches to go with it
but progress is slow...

As for repair of 'Springdrive' (I got told off by an old timer for calling it Clockwork) possibly try Marc the Editor of Garden Railway magazine or Jeff Young (who has built several locos), possibly an email via the garden railway Magazine site?

I have acquired the motor block which was a 0-4-0 HO engine who disposed of his body to grow into a Gn15 logo loco. Someone asked about freight, I started the first car (maybe the only car) and I know "post pictures" which I will soon... still experimenting, you know it's got to be nutz.

Ok here is some early pictures. I was able to pickup some the Bachmann Thomas buggies which I am converting. My company had a 75th year open house and they had these "diamonds" laying around for decorations. As soon someone asked what the logo loco could haul I thought of the "diamond". Here is my motor block also, which has not made it to the fitting room yet.

I just found out for next week or so I have been pulled off of this project, but will supply more pics was work resumes. We all love pictures... I thank all of you for so many ideas.
