I'm not sure if the Bates have a whole coat of arms, but maybe a vest or belt?

Fritz photos revealed mermaids of a more Raphael hue as opposed to the "Little Mermaid" rendition. It just depends how long one has been at sea.

Not living near the sea renders a disadvantage as well. Growing up on the great prairie and now living more than a mile above sea level, the mermaids are few and far between. Nor did I personally witness a mermaid during the times that I did visit the beach, as it is referred to on the Left Coast.

Even snorkeling in Hawaii - no mermaids. Maybe it was because my then wife was with me. That would have scared them away.

This author accepts a needed criticism. - SNIP!

Another elusive "thing" Yunz have in the mountains, Sasquatch, Big Foot, or whatever your local name for it is. Now there is a theme for a scene on a model railroad. :D With their size and strength they would make great lumberjacks, track workers, or any profession where shear physical size and strength is a requirement. ;D

These types, just like Yeties, Minotauro, Cyclops, Medusas are quiete common on every average Large scale layout. We don´t have to spoil the Mermaid thread with them.

I'm gonna have some person do custom mermaid action figures for my layout.

Well some years ago, about the mid 80's, I built my own mermaid, admittedly in HO.

Started with the 'naked lady' from Walthers....inserted her int a 'blob' of modelling clay up to her middle.

Added a sliver of clay for her tail, which I modelled with a tooth pick and then painted the blob to look like a rock and her tail to look like a fish.

Sorry.....no pictures....camera did not have close up lens and model has now gone the the great exhibition in the sky.

Not difficult to do at all.........have a go.....it's fun.

Cheers

Contributions without pictures do not really  help this thread. Those who claim, it is easy to sculpt figures, should go ahead and show examples of their mermaid work.

Lazy or untalented folks like me or my friends, simply go to the next souvenir shop at the seaside and get ready made mermaids. for a few Euro, Pounds or Dollars.

The one on the left is a Disney Mermaid, which was marketed under the name of ARIELLE in Germany, the one on the right was bought at the Baltic Sea along with some more maritime figures. They live happyly at my neighbours pond and watch the trains go by.

Please don´t steal the Little Mermaid from the port of Kopenhagen:

Get a copy in a scale that suits your needs at the souvenir shop. If you don´t feel like going there, simply order by mail.

Model Railroading is fun... as it should be.

Well, those are some fine examples of mermaid modelling. Arn´t there Barbie Memaids on themarket a well?

I realize, little do we know about mermaids. What do they eat or drink? Do they go to Mermaid school ? How do they travel, when not in the water?

I'm guessing they drink water mostly, and their travels outside of the water are apparently via whymsical railways. I'm also sure they have schools - after all, they are part fish.

I have no idea what they eat - certainly not seafood, since that would border on cannibalism- but judging from the Rubenesque physique, whatever this one eats, it's in ample supply.
