Model Railroader Cartoon
« on: January 14, 2010, 07:53:05 PM »
I don't read Model Railroader very often, but the new issue had something I found inspiring.  ;D   It was a cartoon featuring two men with what appears to be a two-level pizza layout.  The top level had the New York skyline with the Statue of Liberty backed up to a mountain range.  The bottom level appeared to be a subway layout.  One of the men says, "Now that's selective compression."

Looks like it would be a fun layout to build.  If you're interested, it's on page 109 of the February, 2010 issue.  I wish I could post it here, but I don't want to run afoul of any copyright issues.  :-[   I am glad that they're finally putting some decent plans in Model Railroader!

They certainly need to do something, other than peddle 'product'... seems you can do anything if you spend enough $'s... then still have same as the next guy....

 :D
I cut it twice and it's still too short.

Well it shows the development in an industry. Fifty years ago there were the DIY articles for building brass locomotives, making motors, building just about everything... now it's the convenience of just buying. Seems all hobby related magazines a catalogs with some articles. And those articles are how to use the purchased items from the catalog.

Someone commented that they must have seen my layout, but the date on the cartoon is 2008 which is before I built the big pizza/wedding cake.

Tommy Two Strikes, that is why I just love getting ahold of old books and magazines. I have learned some tricks to building stuff they don't really cover in most magazines nowadays. However Finescale Railroader has been doing a running article on how to scratch-build your own steam locomotive, unfortunately the author has come up a little short on some details.

There is a local train shop near me (unfortunately one of the few) that has collections of the 50's-90's Model Railroader for about $8 dollars each. And they are in the Binders too!

As for the modern articles of how-to I've noticed that they tend not to be generous with all the details needed for DIY. I blame the editors, though not with malice.

Thats why folks on this site and other sites I frequent make it up as they go along. Anything can be built with enough ingenuity, but the question is; is it worth the effort?
